Charm City Motel Open 2019

This weekend the Bundaberg Chess Club held its inaugural Charm City Motel Open. This is the first time that Bundaberg has staged two Chess Open weekenders in a calendar year and we are grateful for the sponsorship that Greg and Karen MacIntosh from Charm City Motel have provided to make this event possible. There were 40 entrants with a strong field of titled players; chief among them being a Grand Master. Timur Garayev is an American originally from Tashkent; he won the US Open Chess title in 2018. He holds the world record for the greatest number of wins (48) in a simultaneous blindfold chess demonstration. He was kind enough to showcase those skills to us in a presentation on the Saturday night. Whilst unable to see the boards he comfortably defeated three local players.
We also had two International Masters and a Woman International Master in the event. The current Queensland Women and Girls champion (who is eight) was also competing. So Bundaberg keeps its reputation as Queensland's premier regional chess centre. All this was being streamed live to the Internet on livechess.aunz.net direct from the Thabeban State School.
There were two days of fierce competition which included upsets where players ranked more than 700 points below their fancied opposition won; this is the equivalent of a 100 to 1 outsider winning a horse race. Timur Garayev GM emerged the victor with a perfect score of 6/6. Second prize was shared between Heather Richards WIM who has represented Australia at the chess Olympiad and Brodie McClymont both on 5/6. Rating group prizes went to Craig Stewart and Ben Atia in the under 1500; Raphael Atia and Andrew Lin in the under 1200 and Elizabeth Williams, the Queensland Women and Girls champion, and Joshua McCorkell in the under 800.
